Goldfinger House, Solihull
When a building condition survey of Goldfinger house revealed serious structural defects, it turned to Vector's local partner, Sika UK, to recommend products for the remediation works.
The Problem
A detailed concrete survey and testing of the concrete elements was undertaken at the building by Baillie Kerr, which revealed numerous defects, including coating failures, carbonation, and chloride issues, which had caused corrosion and led to delamination and spalling.
The consultant reached out to Sika UK for repair and protection advice. Sika UK’s technical experts conducted site visits and recommended further testing before recommending solutions to fix the issues identified and rehabilitate the building structure.
Being a listed building, the appearance of Goldfinger House could not be changed by the refurbishment works, and the need for colour-matching of standard concrete and aggregate panels proved to be a particular challenge.
The Solution
Sika specified a corrosion management solution including Galvashield® XP galvanic anodes, colour-matched repair and finishing mortars, and coatings which would repair and protect the structure while maintaining the aesthetic of this listed building.
The Result
Sika UK's solution will have added decades to this historical structure's service life while also preventing tonnes of waste material and CO2 emissions from being generated in the process.
This project highlights Sika UK’s expertise in concrete repair and protection. Sika UK is not just a supplier: it engages early and takes an active role in assessing which products best meet the structure’s requirements before advising contractors on their application.
