Monterey Keys Drive Bridge

Monterey Keys Drive Bridge

Helensvale, Australia
The Monterey Keys Bridge located Saltwater Creek in Helensvale, Queensland, Australia.
Owner: The State of Queensland (Department of Transport and Main Roads)

The Monterey Keys Bridge located at the Monterey Keys Drive, Helensvale, over Saltwater Creek which is approximately 8 km from the Gold Coast broadwater.

The Problem

A detailed durability condition survey was undertaken by GHD managed by Gold Coast City Council to establish the condition of the bridge and to identify suitable remedial options.

The bridge started showing signs of corrosion and spalling at headstocks and piers due to aging and environmental factors leading to corrosion and cracking. The bridge sections were also subjected to wear and tear due to aging. The specifications were drawn by Gold Coast City Council for the rehabilitation of Monterey Keys Bridge to protect the bridge piers and headstocks using galvanic anode cathodic protection.

The requirement was to understand the actual cause of deterioration and to extend the life of the bridge structure. The distributed galvanic anode system was required to be suitable for use in a tidal river environment with a minimum design life of 30 years.

Our Solution

The repair of spalled concrete headstocks was carried out by using high performance Galvashield XP range sacrificial galvanic anodes provided by our partner Parchem at the periphery of the repair. The piles were protected by Galvashield DAS, distributed anode system evenly spaced around the pile surface and firmly secured against spacers to provide a minimum clearance between the pile and anodes of 25 mm.

The internal surface of the jackets provided a nominal cover of over 50 mm over the DAS anodes. The anodes were held in place by using non-metallic straps. The Galvashield DAS anodes were mounted on the piles, then cast in situ with a flowable alkaline cementitious grout within the jacketing system. The Galvashield DAS anodes were tailored and customized specifically to the project requirements and conditions that make the system unique and versatile. The atmospherically exposed concrete surface of the bridge was finally protected using a high performance elastomeric protective and decorative coating.

The Result

The benefits of using Galvashield DAS and Galvashield XP range for the application included:

  • The use of the Galvashield DAS anodes and Galvashield XP range provided an effective, innovative and tailored corrosion solution for the project.
  • It provided long lasting repairs to damaged sections of the bridge whilst protecting the structure from ongoing and future corrosion.
  • It provided the long term solution with no additional operational cost during the service life of Galvashield DAS anodes.
