Paris Street Bridge

Paris Street Bridge

Sudbury, Ontario, Canada
Also known as The Bridge of Nations, this four-span bridge holds 89 flags from countries around the world.
Owner: City of Sudbury
Consultant: WSP

The Paris St Bridge in Sudbury, Ontario crosses over a Canadian Pacific Railway line.

The Problem

A condition survey carried out by WSP revealed that the expansion joints and medians had high corrosion potential and chloride content. An estimated 100m2 of surface delamination was detected, along with corrosion potentials more negative than -300mV on approximately 27% of the deck.

Our Solution

WSP had used Galvashield® DAS anodes in a few other bridges for the City of Sudbury before this Paris St Bridge project but approached Vector for recommendations. Vector went through the condition assessment report and recommended to the engineer the benefits of utilizing Galvashield® Fusion® T2 two-stage anodes for this project for its targeted corrosion protection. The engineer and the city of Sudbury elected to take the 25-year protection option with the Galvashield® Fusion® T2 anodes combined with Galvashield® XP4 discrete anodes to be installed in the soffit repairs.

The Result

In total, 1761 Galvashield® XP4 anodes and 2480 Galvashield Fusion® anodes will be installed to provide targeted protection to the affected areas. Construction on the bridge's underside will be carried out by Belanger Construction Ltd. between July 2022 and November 2022, with deck surface and approach work planned for 2023.
