Cleveland Bridge

Cleveland Bridge

BATH, SOMERSET, United Kingdom
Constructed in 1826 in Bath, Somerset crossing the River Avon
Owner: BATH AND NORTHEAST SOMERSET COUNCIL
Consultant: WSP
Contractor: CRL

Located in the World Heritage Site of Bath, England. It is notable for the unusual lodges that adorn each corner in a style that could be likened to miniature Greek temples.

The Problem

The issue was ongoing corrosion and the risk of future corrosion caused by de-icing salts leaking from the road above. The client was knowledgeable about the benefits of ICCP but felt that was not the correct option, partly because they did not want to have a system that was dependent on regular monitoring. Due to large quantities of congested steel, a surface-mounted system was needed to provide a 30-year design life.

Our Solution

Our solution met the client's requirements by leveraging a combination of Galvashield® DAS, Galvashield® Fusion T2  and Galvashield® XP4. Two kilometers of Galvashield DAS were cut into shallow channels and encapsulated in a semi-circular dome of concrete. XP4 anodes were installed in the remaining repairs and our Fusion anodes were installed in areas on high-risk but still sound concrete.

The Result

The system used gave the client confidence that they had adequately dealt with the potential risk. The galvanic anodes saved the need for ongoing maintenance and monitoring, although validation boxes were installed so readings could be taken if the client wished to do so. This piece of history will be protected for decades to come.
