Winterbourne Underpass
The M4 Bridge carries the M4 over Winterbourne Lane spanning over a two lane road.
The Problem
The M4 Bridge at Winterbourne Lane needed repairs and upgrading. The bridge had suffered from water damage in recent years, and the deck needed replacing. Water was leaking from the top of the bridge deck surface, which had caused corrosion to the underside of the underbridge.
Our Solution
The works needed to be carried out to ensure that section of the M4 remained safe. Survey and investigation work including half-cell tests were completed revealing some areas of high chloride levels. Atkins Engineering Consultants selected a design to use drilled-in Galvashield® CC anodes in these areas to protect the structure for the future.
The Result
Contractor CRL installed the anodes and completed the concrete repairs in 2015. The Galvashield CC anodes allow owners and engineers to maintain the integrity of the structure while avoiding costly repairs because they can be installed within sound concrete. This saves labor and time while also keeping waste materials at a minimum.
