The Problem

This well-maintained large multi-story carpark was suffering from localized corrosion around the perimeter of the reinforced concrete deck where chloride-contaminated water flowed to the edge drains.  Corrosion of the reinforcing steel subsequently caused concrete cracking and spalling, which needed to be addressed before the problem grew in stature.  Eight hundred (800) linear meters of slab edges were affected and needed repair.

Our Solution

Protector KKS GMBH a provider of specialist cathodic protection materials and Vector’s local representative offered a practical solution that specifically targeted the sites of active corrosion thus significantly extending the life of the concrete structure.  To repair and protect the slab edges, the existing drainage channels were removed and replaced, targeted galvanic protection was provided using Galvashield® CC2 Type 2A embedded galvanic anodes, and the slab edges were protected by a waterproof and chloride-resistant coating.

The Result

The Galvashield CC2 anodes presented a simple and uncomplicated cathodic protection solution.  The anodes were installed into holes drilled in a single row and connected to a header wire with redundant reinforcing steel connections.  At a spacing of approximately 300mm between anodes, about 2,400 Galvashield CC2 units were used in the repair program.  Certain zones were arranged for regular monitoring to assess the system's performance.  After one year, significant polarization of the reinforcing steel was achieved, and the project was deemed a total success.
