Port of Portland
Located 100 miles (161 km) upriver from the Pacific Ocean, Portland is the largest port in Oregon, moving more than $18 billion in goods annually.
The Problem
The Port of Portland project required a revitalization of this historic port’s concrete exterior. The concrete deterioration was apparent in many different areas of the structural concrete rehabilitation project, including its pier beam, pier girders, pier fender blocks, abutments, conveyer struts, support towers, and pier deck.
During the repair of the original concrete, the pier could not be shut down for any purpose. Therefore, the complicated concrete rehabilitation had to occur while the pier was operational.
Our Solution
Galvashield DAS anodes were embedded within the partial depth deck repairs to protect the existing reinforcement and Galvashield CC anodes were grouted into drilled holes in targeted locations where the concrete was sound but had an elevated risk of corrosion. A coating of arc-spray zinc was then applied to the surface of substructure elements to provide additional protection.
The Result
The galvanic corrosion protection system was designed and implemented to ensure all future corrosion to the repaired structure would be controlled. As a result, this extensive rehabilitation project in which the oldest repairs are nearly 2-and-a-half years old still shows no signs of deterioration.
