Chalk Point Generating Station Cooling Tower Rehabilitation
Work Types: Concrete Repair | Cathodic Protection
Owner: NRG Energy

A concrete natural draft tower, the Chalk Point Cooling Tower is 400ft tall and 250ft in diameter.

The Problem

After nearly 50 years of continuous operation, running brackish water through the cooling tower, corrosion and structure deterioration meant major rehabilitation or replacement of the tower.

Our Solution

We were contracted to design and install a cathodic protection system for the entire cooling tower to extend the service life of the existing reinforcing steel. We provided repair and galvanic protection for the x-brace columns supporting the structure using over 40,000 feet of Galvashield® DAS anodes. An impressed current titanium ribbon anode system was installed on the top 80% of the tower's shell using over 30 miles of titanium ribbon anode.

On the lower 20% of the shell, another ICCP system was installed using 800 Ebonex anodes. Both systems were equipped with a StructureView Remote Monitoring and Control System so the structure could be monitored and controlled remotely.

The Result

Continued serviceability of the cooling tower was maintained during the two-year project as opposed to the extended downtime and significant expense of a complete removal and replacement. 30 to 50 years were added to the expected service life of the cooling tower.
