Rashtrapati Bhavan Presidential Palace

Rashtrapati Bhavan Presidential Palace

New Delhi, India
The Rashtrapati Bhavan is the official residence of the President of India, located in New Delhi.
Owner: The Rashtrapati Bhavan / Presidential Palace
Consultant: IIT Madras

The construction of the palace started in 1912 and was completed in 1929. It was originally called the Viceroy’s House, as it served as the home of the British viceroys who ruled India until 1947. After India gained independence, the palace was renamed as the Rashtrapati Bhavan, meaning the Presidential Palace

The Problem

Its reinforced concrete chajja (sun shade) is a continuously supported cantilever cast-in-place slab. Floral patterns are shown at the bottom by the thick part of the slab near the support. Layers of plaster at the top and bottom have imprinted grooves to look like stone slabs. The chajja is painted brick color, with a buff for the floral patterns.

Corrosion of reinforcing bars and delamination of plaster or concrete had been prevalent in the years leading up to the rehabilitation. Repairs with mortar or micro-concrete have been undertaken and failed prematurely. A cathodic protection system was required to address these issues from the source.

Our Solution

Galvashield® Fusion® T2 anodes were installed in a pilot project to monitor the performance in 2018, which was a success. In 2020 the Galvashield® Fusion® T2 anodes were installed to mitigate active corrosion in the existing Chajja and to provide corrosion prevention in the new concrete where the Chajja was replaced.

The Result

The Fusion anode system will hold back future corrosion with an intense burst of self-generated impressed current that strikes the reinforcing steel and passivates rebar corrosion. This process will reduce future concrete delamination and spalling to a minimum. The set-it and forget-it nature of the Fusion system will reduce the need for extensive maintenance while significantly extending the service life of the structure.
