McCormack Parking Garage
The four-level McCormack Parking Garage was built in 1975 below a 22-story building.
The Problem
Three of the four parking garage floors had spalling, cracking, and corrosion of reinforcement in the concrete. There was also severe rusting and deterioration of the steel in the concrete waffle slabs. Cathodic protection was originally installed in 1992, but the impressed current system was not maintained and fell into disrepair. In 2014, the client realized that the concrete corrosion problem must be addressed.
Our Solution
We installed a new Impressed Current Cathodic Protection system, protecting levels 1, 2, and 3. Cathodic protection was set up in zones on each floor, with level 1-6 zones, level 2-7 zones, and level 3-8 zones. We used Lida oxide coated titanium mesh and StructureView® Monitoring Solutions System for better monitoring and control.
The Result
The service life of the parking garage was extended for another 30 years by the ICCP system. StructureView will allow for advanced monitoring and controls, which will help maintain the cathodic protection system for the extended life of the garage.
